THE MISTAKE
Just one more drink. He smiled at me, a leering grin that turned
my stomach. I was with him now. I’d said
the words yesterday at the Registry Office, pledged myself to him. Now we were on honeymoon. Now I regretted my decision. He was already showing his true nature. My phone had gone missing. I was never alone. He waited outside the bathroom door. He waited until I was asleep before he did
what he needed to do. The man at the
table opposite kept looking at us. Any
minute now his temper would rise. Any
minute now.
I could feel the tension rising. Run!
ReplyDeleteMy story is called 'Someone'
That's frightening. It says a lot for one short paragraph.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
You've done a good job of building hopelessness into this scene. Almost makes one wish the man at the other table would keep staring, her husband would start a fight, and the other guy would take him out for good.
ReplyDeleteI had a boyfriend like that. I feel her pain. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThat comment is really by Alicia Jamtaas but I couldn't get my identity to come up in the list.
DeleteYik... so sad to find out when it's already too late.
ReplyDeleteRun, girl, run!
ReplyDeleteDear Sally,
ReplyDeleteI hope she can get away from him and have the marriage annulled before it's too late. Creepy. Frightening. Well done.
Shalom,
Rochelle
What a time to wise up!
ReplyDeleteHe must have shown some of his true self at some point in time... Poor fool. She has to get out of there and fast!
