GRANDFATHER

The next photo is the PHOTO PROMPT. Does it speak to you? What does it say? Tell me in a hundred words or less.

GRANDFATHER

Eddie arrived at his grandfather’s address, hot and crinkled in mind and attire.  His white shirt had stuck to his back, his tie was undone, his cuffs were rolled up to his elbow and his thighs were itching through his grey pinstripe trousers.

He stretched his long legs, bent his spine back gently to release the tension of the long, relentless drive.

He pushed the rusted gate open, the creaking depressing him more than he could cope with today.  Holding the keys to the house he took a deep breath ready to clear his grandfather’s effects from the house.

  1. Now I'm wondering why Eddie didn't dress more comfortably.

  2. I've done this duty. You've captured the heavy feeling that settles on the soul when we must go through a family member's items. Each thing reminds us that they are gone. Enjoyed this snapshot of one of life's moments. The rusty gate accentuates the rust in life.

  3. Dear Sally,

Having done this after the deaths of my parents, it's a tough go. You captured the feelings.

    Shalom,

  4. You set the scene well with very vivid images. Great story Sally and certainly one anyone who has had a parent or grandparent pass, knows well.

  5. Your descriptive opening had me itching and stretching, so viscerally real! The sadness of clearing out a life is palpable in your writing; beautifully told.

  7. I love this: "hot and crinkled in mind and attire." -- the feeling of sadness and uncomfortable duty is strong. Been there, done that, too.
