G is for Granddad

G is for GRANDDAD

Fred Davis a man I call ‘my hero’
A fire-fighter in World War II
Keeping England safe from harm
His own family evacuated to a farm

I watched and waited for him at the window
Eager to greet him at the door
Ready with soap and hot water
To wash away the grime of the day with cleanser

My Granddad was always there
I would sit on the floor by his chair
Watch him while he ate his dinner
Told him about my day, moaned about a teacher

He didn’t speak much but I knew he was listening
Always patient throughout my ramblings
He smelt of putty and linseed oil
And when he smiled at me my heart filled with joy.

I was your princess
And you were my hero.
